Alpine tourism in the national park Hohe Tauern

The mountaineering village of Mallnitz offers a wide range of ski tours: from perfect high winter and beginner ski tours, such as to the Häusleralm, to challenging multi-day high alpine crossings, such as the Ankogel round tour, every ski tourer will find his dream ski tour in Mallnitz. Most of the routes run in the area of the Hohe Tauern National Park, so be sure to observe the designated wildlife protection areas.

Ski touring: winter sports off-piste in Mallnitz

Ski tourers get their money's worth in Mallnitz. No less than four ski touring areas are available to you there: Tauerntal, Ankogel, Döstental and Häusleralm. So many ski tours to choose from - where to start? Maybe in the Ankogel group: tours there lead up to the Mallnitzer Tauern, the old alpine crossing, and give great views into the neighboring Salzburger Land. The tour to the small Ankogel starts at the mountain station and leads short but crisp over the Lassacher Kees. The descent to Böckstein is a special highlight. Beginners are in good hands at the Häusleralm.

Ski touring recommendations in Mallnitz

Häusleralm (1.868 m)

Perfect high winter and entry tour, which can be started directly from the center of the mountaineering village Mallnitz or from the train station. Ascent and descent take place along the aisle of the former ski slope and are largely avalanche-proof due to the location in the forested terrain. From the Häusleralm you could even ascend to the Lonzaköpfel (2,317 m), but perfect, safe conditions are absolutely necessary for this!

Romatenspitze (2.695 m)

The ski tour to the Romatenspitze is one of the most beautiful in the entire Hohe Tauern National Park and, due to the less difficult ascent and in good snow conditions, is no problem even for less experienced ski tourers. Good physical condition is nevertheless required for the 1,400 HM and the approximately 3.5 hours long ascent, but you will be rewarded at the summit with a magnificent panorama. The ascent is from the Stockerhütte (1,290 m) along the natural toboggan run to the Jamnigalm parking lot at about 1,700 m above sea level. The ski touring cab also runs to this point, shortening the ascent by about an hour. From the parking lot first in moderately steep terrain through the forest, then across alpine pastures in a northwesterly direction to the Peterbauerhütten. Continue along the Latschgboden and then below the field wall in a northeasterly direction to the ridge of the field wall. From there it goes first flat, later moderately steep on the southwest facing side to the summit.

The descent is below the summit towards the southwest, over beautiful slopes back to Latschgenboden. Then continue south to above the Jamnigalm and from there via the forest road back to the parking lot.

Attention: in the interest of wildlife, please pay attention to the wildlife protection area in the lower area of the descent.

Radeckscharte (2.874 m)

The tour to the Radeckscharte with its beautiful descent is especially rewarding in late winter or spring. The ascent is made with the Ankogel cable car to the top station at 2,636 m. From here, the route heads northeast to the Radeckscharte. The descent is north to the dilapidated Obere Radeckalm (1,741 m), continuing through the Anlauftal valley out of the valley to the Böckstein station. Return to Mallnitz by train through the Tauern Tunnel; trains run hourly.

Hagener Hut (2,446 m) - Geiselkopf (2,974 m)

From the Jamnigalm parking lot (tour cab to here) the ski tour leads along the Güterweg, then past the Laschgwand over mostly moderately steep terrain to the Tauernkreuz. From there north to the Hagener Hütte, which is staffed on weekends in winter. The route to the summit leads southwest, first flat, then in the area of the Westerfölkekogel quite steeply on the ridge. This one crosses to the northwestern side, before it continues in a southwesterly direction to the summit of the Geiselkopf (also Gesselkopf ).

The summit tour on the Geiselkopf is demanding, but the ascent to the Hagener Hütte is much easier and, especially in spring, because of the southern exposure, a beautiful firn tour. From the parking lot Jamnigalm to the hut about 2 hours walking time, from there another 1.5 hours to the summit.

Feldseescharte (2,714 m)

Popular, racy spring ski tour. From the Jamnigalm in an easterly direction, overcoming the almost 1,000-meter-high, consistently quite steep slope in numerous switchbacks to the bivouac box on the Feldseescharte (from the Jamnigalm parking lot 1,050 HM, 3 hours). It is possible to climb further up to the Feldseekopf (2,864 m). Descent along the ascent route. Due to the east-facing position, an early start is recommended!

Säuleck (3,086 m)

Beautiful, but strenuous ski tour. Except for some steep flanks, the ski tour is technically not very difficult, but the long approach through the Dösental requires a very good physical condition. Here, especially in warmer temperatures in spring, an overnight stay in the winter room of the Arthur-von-Schmid-Haus is recommended, so that a timely and safe descent through the Dösental is possible. In case of winter closure in the Dösental this ski tour cannot be carried out.

From the parking lot in the Dösental, the route climbs slightly in a northwesterly direction into the valley to the Konradhütte (1,618 m). Another short stretch flat in a westerly direction before you reach a flat high valley via a steep forest section. Here the trail continues comfortably in a westerly direction over the flat alpine pastures of the Eggeralm and the Lackenböden. After another steep section at the foot of the Seeriegel (2,339 m) you reach the Arthur-von-Schmidhaus. Now along the right shore of the lake in the direction of Mallnitzer Scharte and in a wide arc to the north towards the summit. Via the southern flank you ascend to the Säuleck, from whose summit you have a magnificent view (1,650 HM, 6 hours).

The descent with some long flat sections follows the ascent track.

Your host and ski guide Markus (Supi) Supersberger:

Since childhood I have been an enthusiastic and passionate ski tourer and freerider. I am your contact person for everything concerning ski touring vacations, from simple weather information to avalanche reports, snow conditions, tour recommendations or suitable equipment. In addition, I know the most beautiful places to take a breather and the best tips for refreshments.

  • My equipment tip:
Depending on the snow conditions, the ski may be a little wider. A middle width of about 90 mm is suitable for every touring day. I will be happy to help you find the right equipment.

  • My favorite tour:
In high winter - Romatenspitze in the Tauern Valley.
In avalanche-safe conditions: Geißelspitze via Hagenerhütte - descent via Feldseescharte.

  • My motto:
The best condition brings nothing if the technique is not right. Both on the ascent and on the descent I like to give tips.

  • My favorite dish:
Roast venison from Mallnitz deer and Carinthian noodle plate. Meal!
